Phonons came to my attention through a film, the rather bizarrely named Independence Daysaster, in which a girl sits in the back of a truck and mentions phonons, looking round at everyone else and claiming in the silence to like physics. I left the film to look up phonons, since if vision is the only validation then most of my life isn't real.

They explain a lot all on their own, about how we connect with each other and how our beings are able to vibrate in tune with each other - however you want to apply that analogy, whether it's just among friends or across the scale of the whole world. Doesn't matter, really. Phonons let us feel and hear as photons let us see.
